Second series of EdTech talks: building the educational future together! Join our EdTech family!

Friends, hello! Have you heard that life is in full swing at the EdTech Ukraine Association? We're not just exchanging business cards here, we're actually moving education forward, especially in these difficult times. And the recent meeting of our Distance Education Committee is a vivid confirmation of this!
On 15 April, we gathered again to discuss pressing issues and outline plans for the future. And believe me, it was hot! Iryna Yetskalo from Edtech Ukraine Association together with the initiator of the committee Andrii Marchenko from Edtech Ukraine Association set the tone for the meeting, reminding us of our previous agreements - protecting the interests of association members and important steps in the field of distance education. New voices joined the already familiar members of the association, such as Oleksiy Radchenko from Racoon Gang (Transparent Solutions), Yuriy Balkin and Andriy Marchenko from Optima School, Natalia Limonova from GIOS, and Olga Yankova from Smarte: Ivan Kolomiyets from Liko School and Liko Education Online, Natalia Volkovska from Meridian Distance Lyceum and Natalia Garashchenko from Kyiv Academic University.

Andriy Marchenko and Yuriy Balkin presented the concept of a ‘digital learning platform’ that will become a meeting place for EdTech service providers and those looking for them. EdTech Ukraine Association sees itself as the coordinating operator of this process. This platform will feature a variety of private projects offering a wide range of educational services. We are confident that this approach, with the possible involvement of donor support through cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Science, will help many who need it.
The new committee members actively joined the discussion, supporting the idea of the platform and outlining important issues such as integration with state systems (Mriya, Prosvita, Unified School, ICOM-2), overcoming educational losses, and opportunities for cooperation in STEM education. Of course, there were some difficult issues, such as integration with ICOM-2, which proved to be challenging. However, we decided to raise this issue at a meeting with the Minister of Education, as public-private partnerships can open up new avenues.
We also discussed an important issue - how to help students from the occupied territories. The participants agreed that providing distance learning opportunities is critical.
The idea of an EdTech service aggregator was supported, and proposals have already been made to expand its functionality and raise funding.

But the main thing is the quality of services! We understand that user trust is the most valuable thing. That is why we will definitely develop a clear selection mechanism and our own quality standards for providers on the platform. And this is where we really need your help! Each member of the committee has been tasked with preparing their proposals for quality criteria for the next meeting.

What's next? Here are the plans:
A meeting with the Minister to discuss our ideas and gain support.
Active collection of your suggestions on the platform's functionality and development.
Finding out the timing of integration with existing government developments.
Development of the first prototype of the online platform.

We are not afraid of complex issues, we are ready to generate bold ideas and implement them. If you are a representative of an EdTech business, an educational institution, or just a caring person who wants to contribute to the development of distance education in Ukraine, join the EdTech Ukraine Association!

Here you will find like-minded people, share your experience, join important initiatives and build the future of education together with us. And in our Distance Education Committee, your idea can become the next big step!
Don't hesitate, write to us, knock on our virtual door - together we are strong! See you at the next EdTech talks! 😉

The Development of Distance Education in Ukraine: From Challenges to Opportunities

Distance education in Ukraine has come a long way, especially becoming more relevant in recent years. This form of learning opens up new opportunities for acquiring knowledge and skills regardless of location and time, but at the same time poses new challenges for the educational community.
The Importance of Stakeholder Mapping in Distance Education
The successful development of distance education requires a deep understanding of the needs and interests of all stakeholders. Creating detailed stakeholder maps is critically important for several reasons:
🔹 Diversity of Needs and Beliefs: Each role involved in distance education has its own unique pains, expectations, and beliefs. For example:
 - Students: may experience difficulties with self-organization, need more support and feedback, and have varying levels of digital literacy and access to necessary technologies. Their beliefs may relate to the effectiveness of online learning, the quality of content, and the possibility of social interaction through distance education.
 - Teachers: face the need to adapt pedagogical methods to the online environment, develop interactive content, and ensure academic integrity and technical support in distance learning. Their beliefs may relate to their readiness for online teaching, the need for additional training, and the recognition of their work in the new format.
 - Educational Institution Administration: is responsible for developing distance learning strategies, providing infrastructure for online education, supporting teachers and students, as well as ensuring the quality of the educational process in the context of digital transformation. Their beliefs may relate to financial aspects, regulatory issues, and the institution's reputation.
 - Parents (for school education): are concerned about the quality of their children's education, their motivation, and safety in the online environment. They may have varying levels of digital literacy and opportunities to support their child's learning at home. Their beliefs may relate to the effectiveness of distance learning for their child and the necessity of their own involvement.
 - Government Bodies: are responsible for developing policies in the field of distance education, ensuring equal access, quality control, and recognition of online education. Their beliefs may relate to the strategic development of education, digital transformation, and the competitiveness of the national education system.
🔹 An Individual Approach to Communication: Understanding the pains and beliefs of each group of stakeholders allows for the development of effective communication and engagement strategies in distance learning. It is important to speak "their language" with each group, taking into account their specific needs and concerns. This facilitates the building of trust and support for initiatives in the field of distance education.
🔹 Identifying Potential Problems and Conflicts: Analyzing stakeholder maps helps to identify potential points of tension and conflicts of interest between different groups in advance. This allows for the development of preventive measures and strategies for their resolution within the educational ecosystem.
🔹 Shared Vision and Goals: Involving stakeholders in the process of developing and implementing distance education, based on understanding their needs, fosters the formation of a shared vision and alignment of goals, which is essential for success.
Thus, creating and regularly updating stakeholder maps is a necessary condition for the effective development of distance education, as it provides a deep understanding of the needs of all parties involved and contributes to informed decision-making in the context of distance learning.
International Experience: Learning Not Only from Successes
Studying international experience in the field of distance education is an invaluable resource for Ukraine. However, it is important to understand that this experience is not merely a catalog of "best practices" that can be thoughtlessly copied. Far more valuable is analyzing the mistakes made by other countries in similar situations and understanding what solutions ultimately yielded desirable (or undesirable) results.
For example, some countries faced the following problems at the initial stages of developing distance education:
🔹 Insufficient Infrastructure: Investments in technological infrastructure did not always keep pace with the rapid development of online learning, leading to issues with access and connection quality for students and teachers. 🔹 Inadequate Teacher Training: The transition to an online format required new pedagogical skills and the ability to use digital tools. Insufficient training led to a decline in teaching quality. 🔹 Issues with Academic Integrity: The online environment presented new challenges for ensuring academic integrity during knowledge assessment in distance education. 🔹 Social Isolation of Students: The lack of direct communication with teachers and peers could lead to feelings of isolation and reduced motivation among students. 🔹 Unequal Access: Socio-economic factors could exacerbate inequalities in access to quality distance education.
By analyzing how different countries attempted to solve these problems and the outcomes of their actions, Ukraine can avoid repeating the mistakes of others and make more informed decisions regarding the development of its own distance education system. It is important not simply to adopt individual tools or platforms but to understand systemic approaches, consider the context, and adapt international experience to Ukrainian realities in the field of distance learning.
The Evolution of Distance Education in Ukraine: From Birth to the Present
The development of distance education in Ukraine can be conditionally divided into several stages:
🔹 Birth and Early Steps (Late 20th - Early 21st Century):The first attempts to use technology for distance learning were linked to the spread of radio and television. With the advent of the internet, the first online courses and platforms began to emerge, mainly in individual educational institutions and initiatives. Legislative steps were taken to recognize the distance form of education.
🔹 Period of Experiments and Establishment (Mid-2000s - Early 2010s):Active implementation of distance technologies in higher educational institutions. The first specialized distance learning platforms (LMS) emerge. The first research on the effectiveness of distance education is conducted. Certain difficulties arise related to insufficient technical infrastructure, lack of experience in developing quality online content, and resistance from some teachers.
🔹 Period of Growth and Awareness of Potential (Mid-2010s - 2020):Further spread of the internet and increased accessibility of technology contribute to the more active development of distance education. Massive open online courses (MOOCs) from Ukrainian universities and educational platforms appear. The regulatory framework in the field of distance education improves. There is a growing understanding of the advantages of distance learning as a tool for expanding access to education and lifelong learning.
🔹 Period of Challenges and Transformation (2020 - Present):The COVID-19 pandemic acted as a catalyst for the rapid transition to distance learning at all levels of education. This revealed both benefits and numerous problems, as well as the system's unpreparedness for such a sudden transition. The full-scale invasion by Russia in 2022 further highlighted distance education as an important tool for ensuring the continuity of the educational process in the context of war and forced displacement.
Currently, distance education in Ukraine faces several key challenges:
- Unequal access to technology and quality internet, especially in rural areas and frontline regions. - The need to improve the quality of online content and pedagogical methods for distance learning. - Providing psychological support for students and teachers experiencing traumatic events. - Supporting academic integrity in the online environment. - The necessity of updating the regulatory framework to account for new realities and the needs of distance education. - Developing digital competency among all participants in the educational process. - Ensuring effective interaction and socialization in the online environment.
Despite these challenges, distance education in Ukraine continues to develop and play an important role in ensuring the right to education. The further success of this form of learning depends on the joint efforts of the government, educational institutions, educators, students, and society as a whole, aimed at overcoming existing challenges and leveraging new opportunities in the field of distance learning.
