EdCamp

Problem and Solution:

The non-governmental organisation EdCamp Ukraine has been working in the field of professional development for teachers at various levels of education since 2015. The organisation has actively advocated for reform in the field of professional development in the direction of democratisation, decentralisation and integrity — in order to move away from the post-Soviet vertical model and create opportunities for teachers to choose what, from whom and why to learn.

Over ten years of work, EdCamp Ukraine has become an industry leader in professional development and is the largest independent educational movement in Ukraine, bringing together more than 50,000 educators from every second educational institution. The organisation brings the community together through EdCamp-style educational events, offers modern, in-demand professional development programmes (including social-emotional learning, digital literacy, overcoming educational gaps, and strengthening resilience in times of crisis), and develops digital educational solutions that support educational reforms and help create modern education in difficult wartime conditions and distance learning.

Products and Services:

1. EdCamp Ukraine national (un)conferences — a format for professional development for teachers based on open discussion of educational trends, presentation of new materials, and training. Nine national (un)conferences have already been held in face-to-face, online, and mixed formats.
2. Regional (un)conferences — a format for professional development for educators, where participants independently determine the programme and course of the event. Regional mini-EdCamps are organised by local educators with the support of the organisation. Since 2015, 375 events have already taken place.
3. Internet Aces and Experience AI from Google.org — programmes aimed at developing digital literacy and technology skills.
4. EdWay is a platform for improving teaching skills, bringing together over 75,000 users. It connects those who provide educational services in the field of professional development with those who need these services. The platform will soon become nationwide.
5. The POVIR educational platform is a child-friendly space where Ukrainian middle and high school students receive free support and assistance in identifying and catching up on individual educational gaps, enabling them to reduce educational disparities.
6. Social-emotional and ethical learning is a process through which children acquire the knowledge, attitudes and skills to develop a healthy personality, understand and manage emotions, set and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.

History and mission of EdCamp

The NGO EdCamp Ukraine was founded in 2015. The founder of the organisation, Oleksandr Elkin, once saw an online announcement about the activities of the American teacher movement EdCamp and was fascinated by the idea of educational events based on the principles of democracy, non-discrimination and teacher agency, which shapes the programme of events. That is why they are called (un)conferences, as they differ significantly from traditional educational formats. So Oleksandr started this movement in Ukraine, beginning with national (un)conferences. The education community responded very positively to this initiative, and in 2015 the first wave of regional events, or mini-Camps, organised by educational institutions themselves, began. Subsequently, the organisation expanded its range of activities, and now, in addition to professional development, it also advocates for changes in education policy, has international projects and anti-crisis initiatives, including comprehensive digital solutions to overcome the challenges of Ukrainian education, in particular, the EdWay and POVIR platforms.
